FAQs for Cooking Honey Bourbon Beef Short Ribs

1. Can I substitute the honey bourbon?
Absolutely! If you don't have honey bourbon on hand, you can use regular bourbon and add 1-2 tablespoons of honey. Alternatively, you can use a whiskey or even a dark beer for a slightly different flavor profile.

2. Do I need an oven-safe pot?
An oven-safe pot like a Dutch oven works best for this recipe since it allows you to both sear and slow-cook the ribs in the same vessel. If you don’t have one, you can brown the ribs in a pan and then transfer everything to a slow cooker or a roasting pan and cover with foil.

3. Can I make this dish in advance?
Yes, the flavor of the short ribs actually deepens with time! You can make them a day ahead, store them in the fridge, and gently reheat them before serving. The sauce can also be made in advance and stored separately.

4. How can I thicken the sauce?
If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can reduce it on the stove for a few minutes, or add a slurry made of cornstarch and water towards the end of the cooking process.

5. What sides go best with these ribs?
Mashed potatoes, polenta, or even creamy grits make excellent accompaniments. Roasted root vegetables or a fresh green salad also balance the richness of the dish.

    • Flour (for coating)

    • 4-6 beef short ribs

    • Very Noicee AP seasoning

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    • 3 tbsp neutral-flavored oil (e.g., vegetable or canola oil)

    blank

    • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

    • 1 large yellow onion, diced

    • 2 medium carrots, diced

    • 2 celery sticks small diced

    • 4 cloves garlic, minced

    • 1 ½ tbsp fresh ginger, minced

    • 3/4 cup honey bourbon

    • 1 1/2 tbsp soy sauce

    • Water or beef stock (as needed)

    • 2 tbsp brown sugar

    • few sprigs thyme

    • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes

    Directions

    1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).

    2. Season the beef short ribs generously with Very Noicee AP seasoning, salt & pepper . Lightly coat each rib with flour, shaking off any excess.

    3. Heat 3 tablespoons of neutral oil in an oven-safe pot over medium heat. Add the short ribs and brown on all sides until a golden crust forms, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the ribs from the pot and set aside.

    4. In the same pot, add the diced onion and carrots. Sauté for about 2 minutes until they begin to soften. Add the minced garlic and ginger, and cook for another minute, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper.

    5. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the pot and let it melt. Stir in 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and let it dissolve. Pour in the 3/4 cup of honey bourbon, and simmer for 2-3 minutes until the alcohol evaporates. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons of soy sauce and mix well.

    6. Place the browned short ribs back into the pot, ensuring they are well coated in the sauce. Sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes and add 1 sprig of thyme.

    7. Pour in enough water or beef stock to nearly cover the ribs. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

    8. Turn off the stovetop heat and transfer the pot to the preheated oven. Let the ribs cook low and slow for 2 1/2 to 4 hours, or until the meat is tender and falling off the bone.

    9. Once the ribs are cooked, remove them from the pot and set aside. Scoop out some of the sauce and vegetables from the pot, and blend them in a food processor until smooth. Return the sauce to a skillet and reduce it over low heat.

    10. Drizzle the reduced sauce over the short ribs, or serve it on the side. Enjoy the ribs with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh green salad!
